Hi. I have two external hard drives for sale. One is a micronet platinum 250gig firewire/USB2 drive and the other one is a western digital 120gig USB2 hard drive. both are mint. I might be up for trades but cash is preferable. the 120gig is $79 and the 250gig is $170. If you're interested, get in touch.

Ouch, 250gb hard drives on buy.com frequently go for $99 ($139 before mail in rebates).
They are fantom titanium external hard drives usb 2.0 and firewire compatible.
Granted WD is slightly better but I still have to say the price tag is around $50 too high.
By mint, do you mean brand new, still in packaging, or do you mean used but formatted?

used but formatted. The 120gig is boxed. I have never seen a new 250gig external firewire drive for $99. You sure that's not used or something?

www.buy.com look for fantom and click on "computers". currently they are not on sale though so the prices range from $130 for the 250gb (139 I think) to 180 for the 300gb. So, actually, I do take it back, your price is not unreasonable but I'd still look at at lesat -30 personally, theprices of storage are just coming down really fast.
Cheers

my computer is about 3 years old and I don't even know what this fire wire stuff is. USB seems like it would be dredfully slow for a hard drive even with 2.0 but then again what do I know.
still if you have that 120 gig I might be interested. I need space baddly!

Dawson

USB 2.0 transfer speeds are faster, I believe, than the time it takes for the computer to write info to the hard drive, in other words, they're just as fast ad internal drives. I've had usb 2.0 drives, 250gb and I've noticed no slow down in performance, for mp3s etc. Initially you may have to wait 5 to 10 secs when you open the drive but after that you notice no slow down at all (this is with 2.0 with 1.1 it's dreadful).
Firewire is similar to 2.0 but slower and more ioptimized for cameras etc, it was Apple's standardization.
Currently a new 250gb drive from Lacie is going for $129 on www.buy.com and I trust those drives. WD is also a great drive, do not get Maxtor, I had a 250gb Maxtor drive crash on me, it wasn't pretty.
Hope you guys can work something out.
cheers

I think the 120gig drive is sold but if that changes, I'll get in touch.

Ok, the last post here is in March, so... are both of these drives sold already? I'm just asking because if they are, cool... but if they're not, I might be interested.
Thanks,
Maria

Usb 2 = 480 mbps and firewire = 400 mbps.

damn, both those drives are amazingly overpriced. Bought a 250 GB WD firewire drive recently for 80 dollars. Seeing these prices, damn, who would pay that much...

This is an old board yo. And yeah, the stuff has gone down a lot in price the past six months. Both of them were sold anyways months ago.

What's the biggest one can get that doesn't need an extra wall outlet? I plan to get something to use for backup and then probably put it away until I'd back up again.

Hmmmm. You mean like a USB powered flash drive? I have an eight gig one, I'm sure they are bigger than that now. Check www.newegg.com or M wave etc.

You can get a USB 2.5 inch drive. Those are the ones taht go in laptops. Biggest commonly now is 160gb for $150-200 but 200gb are just coming out.

yep. these new bigger laptop drives use perpendicular recording technology, therefore cramming even more on to each platter.
